A Legacy of Learning: The Inspiring History of KPS, Hiriadka

Nestled in the heart of Udupi district, Karnataka Public School (KPS), Hiriadka, stands as a proud symbol of dedication to education and community-driven progress. Its journey from humble beginnings to becoming a respected educational institution is a testament to the vision, unity, and perseverance of the people of Hiriadka.

The seeds of KPS were sown in 1950, when the school received official permission from the district board to start a high school section. With no formal infrastructure in place, the community came together to begin temporary classes at the Shri Veerabhadra Temple in Hiriadka. This gesture showcased the villagers’ strong commitment to education despite limited resources.

A major turning point came when Puttige Shri Sudhindra Thirtha Swamiji generously donated 1.5 acres of land for the construction of a permanent school building. Inspired by the people’s enthusiasm for education, the then District Collector, Dr. M. Rajarathnam, laid the foundation stone in 1950. Deeply moved by the local efforts and interest in promoting education, Dr. Rajarathnam further helped the cause by sanctioning 8 acres of government land to support the school’s expansion.

In 1951, the newly constructed school building was inaugurated by His Holiness Puttige Shri Sudhindra Thirtha Swamiji. Since the school operated under the district board at the time, it came to be recognized as the Board High School of Hiriadka.

The institution steadily grew over the years. In 1965, it was upgraded to a higher secondary school, offering PUC (Pre-University Course) education, which broadened opportunities for students in the region. By 1971, the administrative responsibility was taken over by the government, marking a new chapter in its evolution.

The next major milestone came in 1972, when the school transitioned into a junior college, known as the Government Junior College, offering Arts and Commerce streams. Responding to the growing interest in science education, the college obtained permission in 1991 to start the Science stream, which was officially launched in the academic year 1992-93.

In 2018, this historic institution embraced a new identity as Karnataka Public School, Hiriadka. Under this banner, it now offers a complete range of education—from Pre-Primary, Primary, High School, to PUC sections

Today, Karnataka Public School, Hiriadka, carries forward its legacy with pride, continuing to nurture minds, build character, and inspire future generations. What started as a few classes in a temple has grown into a full-fledged institution—all thanks to the unwavering support of visionaries, local leaders, and a community that believed in the power of education.
